Oils
The use of aromatherapy oils has blossomed in
popularity over the past decade. There are numerous
ways in which essential oils can be used to treat symptoms and ailments, not to mention their indispensability
in the beauty and relaxation arenas - even just to change the ambience of a room. Scents have a scientifically proven effect on our brains and
moods - indeed, aromatherapy has a scientific basis stretching back millennia. There are numerous ways in which massage oils can be used to
treat a plethora of ailments, and scented oils used to improve and enhance your life.

We all have our favourite smells and those we
dislike. Some can subliminally alter our mood or
invoke hazy memories. This is why fragrances and
perfumes are so revered - the bottle on your nightstand is actually a carefully crafted blend of potent aromatic
oils. Perfumes are expensive because some of the
oils require literally thousands of fresh flower heads to produce just a few ml. Aromatic oils really are little vial of nature’s most opulent
treasures – just a tiny amount can be used to great effect. They keep for an inordinate amount of time when stored
correctly (in a cool dark place). When you consider
these factors, you soon come to see they actually represent great value for money consider the time and skill
that goes into making them.
Perfume blends are crafted to invoke a certain
response from the wearer, or those they come into contact with. Essential oils are so effective because our sense of smell
corresponds with the limbic area of the brain. It
is the limbic zone which lets loose our hormones.
This is the reason why a particular scent can make us feel relaxed (massage oils would surely be nothing without
them), happy, or even act as an aphrodisiac.
Similarly, some smells can invoke a negative reaction, but these are not those deliberately cultivated in
aromatherapy oils.
Many of us are familiar with the traditional
burner, but lamp rings are growing in popularity.
These put the otherwise wasted heat from a light bulb into action, using it to warm the essential oil and
diffuse it around the room.

Some oils, such as rose and jasmine, are
particularly expensive, though a little goes a very long way. Some are very affordable, such as peppermint, a refreshing
favourite in the world of aromatic oils. Peppermint is particularly helpful in treating digestive tract
problems. As a massage oil, mixed with a carrier
oil such as grapeseed, it can be particularly uplifting and invigorating.
The human immune system can reap great rewards
from oils such as tea tree oil, which can stimulate and strengthen it and is an excellent disinfectant,
particularly helpful with acne. When used in a
local application, most commonly as a compress, it can reduce swelling and fight cold sores and arthritis and is
great for taking the itch out of insect bites.
Citronella is an excellent insect repellant which has been used as such for thousands of years. Ylang ylang has a wonderful aroma, which is helpful in
reducing high blood pressure because of its powerful stress busting capabilities.
There are three levels of aroma - base, mid and
top notes. Top notes dissipate quite quickly whilst
base notes linger and evolve. There is no end to
the number of combinations of oils that can be used, and most hobbyists soon find themselves with a great
collection in no time. It is worth investing in a
book on the topic, for blending tips to see which scents compliment each other best, to make sure you end up
with the very best result, using tried and tested recipes - though pot luck can also conjure some wonderful
scents.
Ylang ylang comes from the rain forests of the
South Pacific. The smell is as exotic as the
name. It is renowned for its wide range of benefits
and wonderful aroma. It works well as a mood
uplifter and relaxant, and is often incorporated in perfumes because of its sumptuous smell. Its reported benefits include the ability to lower high blood
pressure - a natural side effect of its stress reduction capabilities. Some users, however, have reported side effects when used in
excess, such as nausea and headaches. Like any
herbal remedy, it should be used very sparingly. Again, we cannot recommend highly enough to the budding
aromatherapist the huge range of literature out there on the market to avoid potential pitfuls and to pick up
handy tips.
Rose oil, as mentioned, is oppulant and very
expensive. Often it is sold diluted or joined with
another oil. Aromatic oils are very much a matter
of personal taste, and one user's heaven can very much be another's hell. Trial and error is key, and quite exciting too - formulating
the perfect blend for you, drop by drop. Remember,
no essential oil should be used in massage direct on the skin without being combined with a carrier
oil. Aromatic oils are very potent and will cause
adverse skin reactions where applied alone.
Fortunately, however, carrier oils are inexpensive and will help a little of your aromatic oils go a very long
way.
One particularly effective and relaxing
application of aromatherapy is the aromatic bath.
Where oils are used in this way, again they should be diluted with a carrier. Oil and water do not mix, so the oils form a film on the
surface. Aromatic baths are one of the most
pleasurable, relaxing and effective ways of engaging in aromatherapy. There are a plethera of oils renowned for their positive
effect on the skin, such as sandalwood, rose and jasmine. As you step out of the water, the moisturing oils make contact
with your skin, soothing dryness and leaving you wonderfully scented. Just a few drops mixed with the corresponding amount of
carrier will leave you wonderfully moisturised, but not oily, fabulously relaxed and smelling
great.
Of course, in a burner, aromatherapy oils can
be used neat. Only 2-3 drops are required to infuse
a room with a fabulous scent. It goes without
saying that a lit candle should never be left unattended, which is why we advocate the use of lamp
rings. After a busy day at the office, pop on a
lamp in your lounge, and enjoy the relaxing aromas as you unwind. Scented oils are also very effective in combating unpleasant
household odors - perfect for use in the kitchen where pungent smells tend to linger. Vanilla and cinnamon are particularly fitting in this
environment, with the added bonus that they are both one of nature's aphrodisiacs! We are delighted to bring you a wide variety of essential oils
